How to propagate a dollar tree at home
The dollar tree, also known under the scientific name zamioculcas, is a tropical African plant. Thanks to its original appearance: fleshy green leaves, strong stems, it has long won the sympathy of flower lovers around the world and is grown as a houseplant. Recently, the culture has become especially popular - it turned out that, according to the Eastern philosophy of Feng Shui, zamiokulkas brings prosperity and financial well-being to the house. Since wealth is mainly associated with dollars, this is where the popular name for the flower, the dollar tree, was born. In connection with the popularity of zamiokulkas, the question of how to propagate a dollar tree at home becomes relevant.
How to propagate zamioculcas
The dollar tree, due to its attractive appearance throughout the year, as well as unpretentious care, often settles in homes and offices, it is presented as a symbolic gift for happiness and good luck. And although the plant blooms very rarely, and the white or pale pink flower is rather inconspicuous, this is compensated by the juicy green foliage. Under suitable conditions, zamioculcas grows above a meter and can be used as a garden plant in the summer.
The only drawback of the culture is slow growth - first, zamioculcas forms roots, only then - a green mass.
You can buy a ready-made zamiokulkas seedling in a pot at a flower shop, but it is quite expensive. In addition, a purchased Dutch flower, falling into an ordinary home environment, without treatment with special preparations and growth activators, can stop growing and adapt for a long time. Having studied the nuances of how a dollar tree propagates at home, it becomes possible to grow a healthy, strong sprout, already adapted to a specific environment.
Zamioculcas can be bred by cutting or dividing the tuber. The choice of method depends on the state of the flower. An adult plant that needs replanting must be split up. In a young tree, it is better to separate the stem or leaf - this way the zamioculcas is subject to minimal damage.
Cuttings
Zamioculcas propagation by cuttings is a rather painstaking process, but if you approach it with accuracy and patience, then even beginner growers can do it correctly. Cutting consists in choosing a shoot and dividing it into several roots.
Step-by-step instruction:
- How to take a scion. An adult stem (leaf plate) is selected, on which several buds are formed. Cut with a sharp knife at an angle. The larger the shoot, the easier it will take root - it has a fairly large supply of nutrients. The stem is divided into several pieces - cuttings.
- How to root a zamioculcas with a stem. It is recommended to treat a cut on a tree and formed cuttings with activated carbon - this eliminates the risk of infection of the plant, and it recovers faster.
Prepared cuttings must be planted in a container with soil. Drainage is lined at the bottom - fine gravel or expanded clay, soil is poured on top. You can use ready-made earthen mixture for cacti or prepare the soil yourself. To do this, you need to mix peat, sand and fertile garden soil. A special substrate, vermiculite or peat mixed with perlite, is also suitable.
The soil is well moistened, and cuttings are planted (it is necessary to deepen them to the level of the first bud and slightly tamp the soil).
How to propagate with a branch in water. Another recipe for growing a dollar tree from a cutting is to take a whole branch or roots and place them in water until the first roots appear. You should not be upset if the roots of zamiokulkas do not appear for a long time - this process can last more than a month. So that the root does not start to rot, activated carbon is added to the water.
Sheet
Propagating zamioculcas with a leaf is the simplest, but not always effective way. For its implementation, you only need a leaf of a plant (always with a base - a small twig). As with cuttings, two planting methods are used:
- Cut, treated with activated carbon and well-dried leaves are placed in the ground. A growth promoter can be applied to the tips.
- Rooting zamiokulkas leaf with Kornevin. The leaf is placed in water with an activator of root formation - the drug Kornevin (Zircon or Heteroauxin is also often used). It is planted in a pot after the appearance of the first roots.
After planting, it is advisable to cover the sprouts with a film or glass jar and place them in a warm, dry room without drafts. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the film so that the plant does not rot. Watering the seedlings is not worth it - it is enough to spray the leaves and soil.
The process of germination of zamiokulkas from a leaf is long, it can last more than six months. You can transplant a sprout only after the appearance of several new leaves.
How to divide zamioculcas
If the dollar tree has reached a large size and requires transplantation, there is most likely no better way to divide the zamiokulkas. The right time to transplant a plant is when the tubers are intensively developing. The roots of the flower are powerful, and if they do not fit in the pot, they can break it. When the container becomes cramped for a tree, you need to replant or divide it.
There is nothing difficult in how to divide the zamiokulkas during transplantation. The plant is carefully removed from the pot along with the soil. If the roots have damaged the container, then it is better to just break it.
The roots are gently unraveled and the pagons are separated.
The resulting sprouts are placed in separate containers with drainage and soil, similar in composition to the previous one. It is recommended to choose a pot of ceramic or clay, extended upwards.
The best time to breed and transplant a dollar tree is spring.
