The red fruits ripen in September and remain on the plant after the foliage falls.

Attention! With good care, a plantation can decorate a plot with its appearance for 50 years.

Planting a plant

Barberry bushes are planted on the site in spring or autumn. The place is chosen sunny, windswept by northern winds.

The culture prefers to grow on slightly alkaline soils. If the soil is acidic, lime or dolomite flour is preliminarily introduced into it.

Planting from seeds

In the fall, the site is freed from debris, dug up, loosened the soil.

The seeds are planted as follows:

  • make grooves with a depth of 1-3 centimeters;
  • watering the beds;
  • seeds are sown thickly;
  • covered with sand, then insulated with sawdust.

Barberry seeds have poor germination, so they need to be sown thickly. Germination will occur in the spring, after the onset of warm days. If necessary, the seedlings are thinned out. The bushes can be planted in a permanent place after 1.5-2 years.

Planting seedlings in open ground

Young plants are planted on the site as follows:

Planting barberry in the form of a hedge

  1. Dig holes with a depth and diameter of 40 centimeters. If several bushes are planted, the distance between them is at least 2 meters.
  2. Drainage from small stones or expanded clay is laid out at the bottom, then a layer of fertile soil is poured.
  3. The seedlings are placed in the middle of the ditch, the roots are spread, and covered with earth.
  4. The trunk circle is tamped, watered with water.

Important! If the gardener plans to plant barberry as a hedge between plots, the spacing between the bushes should be no more than 50 centimeters.

How to care for barberry Green Carpet

Bushes require care, which consists in watering, feeding, loosening the soil, removing weeds. To maintain a decorative appearance, pruning is performed twice a season.

  • Watering

The variety is drought-resistant, does not require frequent watering. But the bushes acquire the greatest decorative effect with regular irrigation.

If the weather is dry, hot, water the barberry at least 1 time a week. The soil should be moistened to a depth of at least 40 centimeters. Use warm, settled water for irrigation.

  • Top dressing

They begin to fertilize the bushes 2-3 years after planting.

In the spring, nitrogen fertilizers are used to build up the vegetative mass.

At the beginning of summer, barberry is fed with full mineral dressing.

In August, potassium and phosphorus are added under the bushes.

Important! So that the root system does not burn with salts, before any top dressing, the ground is pre-moistened with plain water.

  • Pruning

To make the shrub look decorative, pruning is done at the beginning of summer, then at the beginning of autumn.

Shoots are cut to ⅓ of their length. In addition, dry, wind-damaged, diseased branches are removed during the season. The procedure is carried out with a sharp disinfected instrument. The work is performed with gloves, since there are sharp thorns on the shoots.

  • Flowering period

Depending on the growing region, the Green Carpet barberry blooms in late May or early June.

Inflorescences consist of 2-5 flowers, scattered over the entire surface of the shoot. They are painted red. Small fruits ripen from inflorescences by autumn.

Reproduction methods

There are several ways to breed a plant of the genus Berberis on the site. Most often, cuttings are used, propagation by layering. When the bushes grow, they can be divided and planted separately. Seed propagation by gardeners is usually not used, since it is laborious, and the bushes are ready for planting on the site only after 2 years.

Reproduction by layering is carried out in the spring as follows:

  • dig a groove 8-10 centimeters deep;
  • bend the branch to the ground;
  • fixed with bent wire;
  • the place of contact is covered with soil;
  • watered.

Throughout the summer, the layering is looked after: they water, loosen the ground, remove the grass growing around. In the fall, the young seedling formed at the pinning site is transplanted to a permanent place.

Using cuttings, shoots are first rooted in water, or immediately planted in boxes with light soil. When the cuttings start to grow, they are first transplanted into separate containers, then to the site.

Additional Information: barberry berries are dried and used as a seasoning for pilaf. The aroma is better preserved in whole fruits.

Diseases and pests

The Green Carpet Tunberg barberry can be infested by aphids and moths. The first one sucks out juices from leaves and shoots in a short time, the second one eats berries.

Permitted insecticides are used against pests. Gardeners who prefer to use folk remedies can spray the bushes with a soap or tobacco solution. However, experienced barberry owners say that folk methods help only at the initial stage of the attack.

From diseases, barberry can be affected by powdery mildew and leaf spot. Fungicides are used to combat pathogenic microorganisms. In order to prevent illness, the bushes for prevention can be sprayed several times with copper-containing preparations.

Preparing for winter

In autumn, plants are watered abundantly with water. Moistened roots will tolerate severe frosts more easily.

When stable frosts last for several days, the bushes are spud with humus to a height of 10-12 centimeters.

In anticipation of a little snow, cold winter, it is recommended to cover the barberry with spruce branches, as well as install arcs on which to throw agrofibre.

Use in landscape design

Barberry Green Carpet is so good that it can be used in the garden as a tapeworm. A singly planted bush will decorate the site with green leaves in summer, and yellow-orange in autumn. Barberry will look no less impressive in a shrub mixborder. You need to select plants of different height, shape, color of the leaves.

Also Green Carpet can be planted in a group of 3-5 shrubs. For example, in the center of the landscape composition, a pyramidal thuja is planted, and a barberry around it. The group is planted in the central part of the site and it becomes observable from all sides. From the culture, you can build a hedge by trimming it from the sides and leaving the top free.
