Jacaranda - a tree with purple flowers

Enchanting with its beauty, the Australian tree has won the hearts of lovers of the flowering crown on all continents. There is a tradition among Australians to plant jacaranda to celebrate the birth of a new family member.

Jacaranda tree

The jacaranda plant is a tree with more than fifty varieties, the vast majority of which are evergreen. An adult tree can reach a height of 30 meters. The composition of the wood allows the production of high-quality furniture items, but the plant is valued not only for its practicality, but also for its spectacularity during flowering.

Most species bloom in purple or blue, which delights anyone lucky enough to see the tree during flowering. There are varieties that bloom in white. In addition to the unforgettable spectacle, jacaranda envelops the surrounding area with a honey scent.

Additional Information. Some sources claim that the plant spread from Australia, while others recognize South America as its homeland. Today, the violet tree has spread to some European countries with a mild climate, as well as in Mexico, Israel, India.

Violet tree flowers

There is no one who would remain indifferent at the sight of a blooming jacaranda. The most common description of this period is a lilac miracle. The flowers of the tree are collected in a brush, more than a dozen pieces in each. One corolla has 5 petals, the inflorescence is bisexual. The buds reach 5 cm in length, at least 3 cm in width.

The fruits that appear after flowering are a box with many seeds. The leaves of many varieties outwardly bear a strong resemblance to the foliage of a fern or mimosa, from which another name is common - mimosa jacaranda.

Growing jacaranda in Russia

Under natural conditions, jacaranda (violet tree) does not grow. He needs a special climate, as close as possible to the tropical one. It can be found in the Crimean Botanical Garden, where experts create all the necessary conditions for keeping the tree.

Inflorescences are collected in a corolla

Even in conditions close to native conditions, lilac trees grow no more than three meters in height. Modern flower growers are trying to grow it quite successfully as a houseplant.

Content of the violet tree at home

To keep a tropical plant in an apartment, you need to remember that it loves high humidity. This means that every day it will need to be sprayed several times. Florists note that the lilac trees growing in the apartment bloom extremely rarely, but if this did happen, it is impossible to forget such a sight.

Transplanting a plant is permissible only in spring, therefore, it is necessary to purchase a tropical beauty in flower shops during this period, so that you can safely transplant at home into your own pot. A plant purchased at other times of the year cannot be transplanted, it must wait for the spring period.

Growing at home

For transplanting, you need to prepare drainage and soil mixture, consisting of:

  • peat;
  • humus;
  • sand;
  • turf land.

Mix the ingredients in equal proportions to obtain a light and nutritious soil.

Optimal place for placement

The purple tree is best placed on the west or east windows. If the tree lacks light, its foliage will begin to deform.

Additional Information. In order for the crown to retain its even and symmetrical appearance, the pot needs to be turned from time to time with its shadow side towards the light.

Violet tree transplant

When it's time to transplant an adult plant, you will need to choose a pot that is wider and deeper. The new one should not be much more voluminous than the previous one - only 3 centimeters wide and 3 deep.

It is important not to damage the roots at the time of transplanting. The process itself does not differ from transplanting any other plant, but do not forget that deepening the root collar for jacaranda is unacceptable.

Additional Information. Since the most common species for home maintenance is mimosoliferous jacaranda, it must be remembered that, regardless of the quality of the conditions created, the tree will shed its leaves in winter, which is absolutely normal.

Reproduction of jacaranda

The Jacaranda tree, where it grows in its natural environment, propagates by seed.

Cuttings

After spring pruning, a sufficient number of shoots remain, suitable for propagation by cuttings. It is better to choose those that reach a height of 8 cm.You can get roots on the processes in two ways:

  • Aging in soft water at a temperature of + 25˚С;
  • By placing in a peat-sand mixture, previously abundantly moistened, the cuttings should be covered with a glass cap or a cut plastic transparent bottle. The temperature regime must also be maintained at around + 25˚С.

Growing from seeds

It is not difficult to grow jacaranda from seeds at home, but the process will take some time:

  1. Place the seed on a damp cloth, cover it with the other end, and put it in a dark, warm place for 24 hours.
  2. Sow in prepared, suitable soil to a depth not exceeding 1 cm.
  3. Cover the planted seed pots with foil.
  4. Observe the temperature regime - not lower than + 22˚С, optimally - + 24˚С.
  5. Seedlings will appear within 20 days.
  6. The film can be removed, but make sure that direct sunlight does not fall on the seedlings.
  7. Seedlings with 3-4 true leaves are planted in separate pots using the transfer method. The diameter of the container for young shoots should be no more than 7 cm.

Jacaranda care

Where jacaranda grows on its own, the air has a high humidity and temperature corresponding to the tropics. In indoor conditions, you need to strive to recreate a similar microclimate.

Watering mode

Watering the plant is required regularly, focusing on the drying out of the topsoil. To do this, it is convenient to use an auto-installation that controls the amount of moisture in the soil, moistening it if necessary.

Top dressing

Fertilization is required in spring and summer, on average, once every 3-4 weeks. Masters of the maintenance of violet trees claim that complex mineral fertilizer is suitable for this plant.

During flowering

If a real miracle happened, and the plant bloomed at home, do not worry and arrange maximum care for it. Watering is maintained in the same mode, foliage is sprayed regularly, but trying not to get on the "violets" themselves.

During the rest period

In autumn and winter, when the tree has dropped its foliage, one must remember that it is still alive, although it goes into a state of sleep. You still need to water the soil, though less often than in summer or spring. Complete drying of the substrate must not be allowed, otherwise the plant may die.

Preparing for winter

In anticipation of cold weather, it is important to make sure that the plant has not been exposed to any pests, otherwise it will not be able to overwinter in an infected state.

The most dangerous problem that is difficult to get rid of is root rot.It can infect a plant if it is repeatedly flooded with water. Another reason for the deterioration of the root system is the improper composition of the soil.

Important! If during transplantation land was used without fluoride, sand and sod land, the soil does not have the ability to breathe, the water in it constantly stagnates and sour. The roots rot over time.

It is not easy to cure a tree from this disease - you need to completely free the roots from the pot, cut off diseased processes, treat with a weak solution of manganese. Only in the field of this can the plant be returned to the pot, but only if the composition of the soil fully meets the requirements of jacaranda.

Decorating a house with even a tropical plant will not be difficult if you apply a little energy to humidify the air and foliage every day. Step-by-step rules for growing even such a rare beauty as a Brazilian violet will help a novice grower navigate. Therefore, it is possible and necessary to give it to a woman, despite the fact that she never had exotic plants in her apartment, because jacaranda brings good luck.
