Mandeville flower - home care

Dipladenia, or Mandeville, has recently become popular with flower growers. Its multi-colored, bright buds make culture a real decoration of a plot or apartment. This exotic representative of the tropics requires increased attention and special care, but the result of the efforts expended will undoubtedly please.

Mandeville (diplomatic family) - a description of which family it belongs to

The evergreen climbing liana belongs to the Kutrovy family. In its natural habitat, it grows in the countries of South and Central America. The genus Mandevilla includes nearly 200 plant species. Street and indoor diplomatic property is sometimes called Brazilian or Chilean jasmine. Mandeville was named after the English diplomat and flower lover Henry Mandeville, who popularized the flower during his service in Argentina.

Mandeville flower

Interesting information. From the Greek, the word "dipleadia" is translated as "having double glands."

The most common home-grown flower varieties are:

  • petunia Crazytunia Mandeville (petunia x hybrid Crazytunia Mandeville);
  • Mandeville Sundeville
  • Mandeville Outstanding (mandeville Illustris);
  • Mandeville Diamantina;
  • Pink Perfect.

In the wild, the dipleadia grows by 2-4 m per year. At home, it is planted as an ampelous plant, on supports or in flower pots. Mandeville pruning is used to form beautiful bushes. The blossoming buds almost completely cover the curly stems. The flower consists of 5 petals of a white or pink shade and reaches a diameter of 10 cm. On average, one bud lives for 10 days, then a new one grows in its place. The leaf plates are fleshy and egg-shaped. There is milk inside them.

Caring for a Mandeville outdoors or at home requires attention, but the result will not be long in coming.

Note! The juice found in the foliage of diplodenia is poisonous. It is necessary to work with the plant in protective gloves and keep children away.

Mandeville - home care

When growing a diploma, it is important to remember its capriciousness. However, proper planting and care will allow you to grow an exotic plant at home.

Temperature and lighting

Mandeville is a plant native to the tropics, so you need to create appropriate conditions for it. The optimum growing temperature is 21-25 ° C. The shrub thrives even in hotter weather, if sufficient humidity is maintained. With the onset of winter, the liana begins a dormant period, so the room temperature must be reduced to +15 ° C.

A resident of the tropics loves to be in a well-lit place, but she also feels quite normal in the shade. It is best to place the flower pot on the windows facing the south or southeast side of the house.

Important! If the weather is cloudy during the flowering period, then the plant must be provided with additional lighting.

Watering, spraying and moisture

In the summer, the plant needs constant, but not abundant watering. For this, soft rain or distilled water is used. In winter, during a state of rest, watering the flower should be very rare.Even when the soil is completely dry, the plant will feel comfortable.

On hot days, it is recommended to spray the vine at least once a day. This should be done carefully so as not to fall on the buds.

If the air in the room where the mandeville grows is too dry, it must be humidified. A container filled with water can be placed next to the pot.

Soil and dressing

For proper planting, a nutrient soil with a high level of acidity is needed. You can purchase a substrate or make one yourself. This will require:

  • garden soil;
  • leafy land;
  • peat;
  • pebbles.

Since Mandeville spends too much energy on flowering, it needs regular feeding. In the spring, this is done at least twice a month. In the summer, you need to fertilize the flower more often - once every 10 days. Complex preparations for decorative flowering plants are used as top dressing.

Important! During the dormant period, you do not need to fertilize the vine.

Support

Dipladenia refers to lianas, it has very fragile shoots that need additional support. The plant should be placed next to a wall or attached to special stands and ladders.

Winter care

Plant wintering begins in late autumn and ends in early spring. In this case, the following conditions must be observed:

  • At the end of summer, the number of watering is reduced to 1 time in 10-14 days.
  • At the end of autumn, old shoots are cut off, leaving 1/3 of their length.
  • Liana is placed in a cool room until spring.

Outdoor care

When choosing a planting site for vines, it is important to consider the amount of lighting. The bush hole must be filled with a special composition consisting of sandy, drained soil with the addition of humus. If the flower is planted in a container, then you need moss, sand, garden soil.

The tropical plant does not tolerate drafts, heavy rains and does not like soils with poor drainage. In such conditions, it will grow poorly and may even die.

A fast-growing vine needs support for long stems. These can be frames, racks or trellises.

In order for a young bush to delight with lush foliage and flowering, it must be pinched regularly. It is also necessary to remove damaged or dried out areas and make sure that pests do not start on the flower.

Diplomas can withstand temperatures not lower than +10 ° C, therefore, in regions with cold winters, it must be brought indoors.

When and how it blooms

The bloom of diplodemy begins in early March and ends with the onset of the first frost. The buds are quite large, have different colors and a strong aroma.

If the plant is properly looked after, then flowering can occur as early as next year. On one bush, from 40 to 80 buds can bloom at the same time.

With the right care of Mandeville, you can get it to bloom throughout the year. To do this, it is necessary to provide the vines with constant artificial lighting, the desired temperature and humidity from September to April.

Additional Information. The higher the ambient temperature, the richer the color of the leaves of diplodenia.

Pruning

Pruning diplodenia is a very important step in plant care. Without this procedure, the vine will grow strongly. It is best to prune the plant at the same time as the spring transplant or preparation for wintering. For a positive result, you need to adhere to the following requirements:

  • Remove antennae that may have formed during the time the flower was in a shaded place.
  • Do not touch the young shoots, as it is from them that new buds will appear.
  • Do not prune during flowering.

Reproduction of Mandeville

Liana is bred at home by cuttings or seeds.

Cuttings

This is the simplest and most common breeding method. A new bush can be obtained from cuttings in two ways:

  • planting it in the ground;
  • rooting in water.

Before this, the seedling must be treated with a growth stimulant. Further, the procedure is performed as follows:

  1. The stalk is placed in water or soil and covered with a glass jar.
  2. The seedling is regularly watered and ventilated.
  3. After rooting the cutting, the shelter is removed.
  4. The seedling is moved to a permanent place.

Note! From start to finish, the process takes about 3 months.

Seeds

This method of reproduction is rarely used, since there are no diplodenia seeds on sale, and it is rather difficult to get them on your own. Even if it was possible to achieve seedlings, then later you will have to spend a lot of time on growing and leaving them. To do this, it will take 3-4 months to maintain the following conditions for seedlings:

  • use a slightly acidic loose substrate;
  • keep the temperature at 22-28 ° С;
  • monitor the level of humidity and avoid stagnant water.

Seed propagation

Transfer

It is necessary to replant the plant every year. This is done by the transshipment method at the end of winter, when it is clear that the diplody is coming out of a state of rest.

In order for the flower to feel comfortable, the new soil must be disinfected. To do this, a fresh drainage layer is laid out at the bottom of the pot. The flower is taken together with a lump of earth from an old container and carefully placed in a new one. The substrate is poured there and the seedling is watered.

Possible growing problems

An exotic plant can be attacked by pests and various diseases, so it must be carefully looked after. Most often, Mandeville suffers from powdery mildew and mealybug attacks.

Powdery mildew

Problems arise from improper care: poor water or soil, low temperatures and insufficient lighting. To combat diseases, the bush is recommended to be treated with fungicides and insecticides. The principles of flower care are immediately adjusted. Pests are detected by the following features:

  • leaves turn yellow and wither;
  • the buds are deformed;
  • white spots appear on the ground.

Spider mites and whiteflies are dangerous for the plant. If they are found, the foliage must be wiped with soapy water and treated with insecticides.

Why does Mandeville not bloom

Flowering disorders may be due to a lack of lighting, improper watering or fertilization, lack of space in the pot, or low temperatures. In order for the buds to begin to bloom, these problems must be corrected.

Novice gardeners are unlikely to be able to grow this exotic plant at home. If the experiment succeeds, then Mandeville will become a real decoration of the apartment. The main thing is to provide her with proper care and constantly monitor the condition of the flower.
