Transplanting clematis to another place in the fall, spring or summer

Climbing plants, especially flowering ones, are able to give the site a special charm. One of these spectacular vines is clematis. It is very unpretentious, and some varieties are quite frost-resistant. But there are some points when growing this vine that require a special approach. Transplant is one of them. This process should be approached responsibly so as not to harm the plant.

Transplant of clematis

Clematis is very hard on the transplant. The roots of this plant are tender and vulnerable, they recover for a long time and adapt to a new planting site.

Important!In order for the plant to suffer minimal damage during transplantation, the technology should be strictly adhered to.

Also, to move this plant to another area, you will have to cut off its long shoots. This will make it impossible to admire the lush flowering of clematis in the year of planting.

Abundant flowering of clematis

The reasons

The need to move the creeper to another place can arise in several cases:

  • The size of the bush is too large and there is not enough area for further growth.
  • The age of the plant requires its rejuvenation.
  • There is a need for a new copy and it was decided to get it by dividing the bush.
  • Initially, the landing site was chosen incorrectly.
  • There was a need to carry out construction or repair work directly at the site of the growth of the vine.
  • Clematis is afflicted with a disease and for recovery requires a change in the place of its growth.

Transfer

Particular difficulties during transplantation may arise if the plant is already mature and its size is large. It will be problematic to extract the root system with a large clod of earth. Also, removing the shoots from the support can be difficult.

When to transplant clematis

To carry out this agrotechnical procedure, you can choose both autumn and spring periods. Timing for each region may differ depending on the climate.

When transplanting in the spring, this work should be started only when the earth is well warmed up and the threat of frost has passed. The time of autumn planting should be determined so that the plant has time to get stronger before the onset of cold weather.

In some cases, it may be necessary to move the vine during the summer. This option is possible, but it is better to avoid it. If, nevertheless, transplanting clematis to another place in the summer is necessary, two important rules must be observed:

  • Two to three days before transplanting, clematis should be well watered, which will provide its roots with moisture for the first time after moving.
  • After removing the root system with a lump of earth, it must be wrapped in a dense cloth. This prevents moisture loss due to high temperatures and sunlight.

It is also worth considering that the opportunity to enjoy flowering this year will not work.

Important! There is even a risk that next year, due to the long adaptation period, the vine will not bloom.

Transplant timing for different regions

Due to the fact that clematis is unpretentious and very frost-resistant, it can be grown in almost all regions of Russia. But it is applicable to each individual region, the answer to the question - "when to transplant clematis - in the fall or in the spring?" may be different.

Siberia

Even in Siberia, this vine can fully grow and develop. To do this, it is necessary to observe the terms of planting and the rules of plant care.

It is better to transplant clematis in the conditions of this cold region in the spring; it is not advisable to do this in the fall. If you still had to move the plant in the fall, it is better to do it early, in early September. In this case, the vine will get stronger before the onset of cold weather. For the winter, the planting must be covered. In Siberia, all clematis, regardless of variety and age, require shelter for the winter period.

Clematis in Siberia requires shelter for the winter

Spring transplant is preferable, during this time the most stable weather. The period from mid-April to mid-May is best. The main thing is that by this time the soil has warmed up enough. If there is no heat for a long time, you can postpone the transplant to June.

Moscow suburbs

The milder climate of the Moscow region in comparison with the Siberian climate allows you to start transplanting clematis both in spring and in autumn. Landing times are longer:

  • in spring - from April to the end of May;
  • in autumn - from early September to mid-October.

Important! Both young seedlings and adult plants do not require shelter for the winter period in the Moscow region.

Southern regions of Russia

For these regions with a mild and warm climate, an autumn transplant is better, or rather, the period from late August to late October. This is the best time to transplant clematis to another location.

You can resort to this procedure in the spring, but there is a risk of being late with planting. Warmth in such a climate comes early, the plant can rapidly move into growth. It is not worth replanting a vine on which young shoots have already appeared. It is better to postpone this work until the fall.

Transplanting an adult plant

In a new place, young plants or purchased seedlings take root well, which cannot be said about adult specimens. Of course, if there is a risk of losing an adult clematis, for any reason, it is better to take the risk and transplant it to a new place.

Important! Transplanting this vine over the age of seven is not recommended at all. There is a high probability that the plant will die.

It is better to start moving an adult clematis in the fall, after the end of flowering.

There are two important points to consider:

  • All shoots must be shortened so that no more than two buds remain on them.
  • The root system must be dug as much as possible, cutting off as few roots as possible. It should be removed carefully so that the largest possible clod of earth can be moved.

Planting in a new place should be carried out according to the same rules that apply to young plants or purchased seedlings.

How to transplant clematis

Considering that the movement of clematis is difficult, the choice of a place for planting should be approached carefully. There are several important factors to pay attention to:

  • The soil. Clematis needs a nutritious and breathable soil. Its root system does not tolerate stagnant moisture, for this reason, places of stagnation of melt or rainwater should be avoided. It is also not recommended to place the liana in areas where groundwater is close to the surface.
  • The sun. Like many flowering plants, this vine needs sunlight. It is better to place it in a well-lit area, in the shade it may not even bloom.
  • Wind. For transplanting, it is better to choose an area protected from drafts and strong gusts of wind. Clematis shoots are fragile and can be damaged by severe storms.
  • Support. An adult bush is quite voluminous and requires adequate support. When choosing a location, you should think about its installation in advance.

Important! Only by choosing the most favorable conditions for growth, you can count on the abundant flowering of clematis in the future.

Landing technology

Before proceeding directly to the planting process, you should prepare the necessary tools.

Tools

Here's what you need:

  • shovel;
  • secateurs or sharp knife;
  • container for soil preparation;
  • watering can with settled water.

Important!Water for irrigation should be at room temperature and separated. It is better to fill the watering container in advance and leave it in the sun for a while. Cold tap water can damage the roots.

The soil for filling the planting hole must also be prepared in advance. To do this, the garden soil is mixed with humus, sand, ash and superphosphate in the following proportions:

  • 2 buckets of humus;
  • a bucket of sand;
  • 2 tbsp. ash spoons;
  • 3 tbsp. tablespoons of superphosphate.

Important! Having prepared everything you need, you can start the transplant. You should follow the sequence of actions and perform all manipulations with clematis very carefully.

The transplant is carried out through several sequential steps.

  1. Pit preparation. The deepening for planting should be twice the size of the extracted earthen lump.
  2. Creation of a drainage layer. The bottom of the dug hole is filled with a layer of fine gravel, gravel or broken brick.
  3. Filling with soil. The prepared soil should cover the drainage layer by a few centimeters.
  4. Pruning shoots. They should be shortened so that no more than three buds remain.
  5. Extracting the root system. To do this, the bush is dug in a circle, some of the longest roots are cut off. The roots should be pulled out with as large a clod of soil as possible.
  6. Placing the plant. The root system, together with a lump of earth, is placed in a planting pit.
  7. Filling with soil. The empty space between the root system and the edges of the pit is filled with the rest of the soil so that the root collar is located 8-9 centimeters below ground level.
  8. Abundant watering. One bush will require about 10 liters of water.
  9. Mulching. At first, the transplanted vine requires a lot of moisture. In order to avoid drying out the soil around the planting, it must be mulched with peat or dry grass.

Care after landing

Transplanted clematis requires regular watering. It is better to carry it out in the evening with lukewarm water.

Young shoots on a support

The growing shoots must be carefully guided along the support as needed.

Before the onset of cold weather, the shoots are removed from the support and laid on the ground in a circle, having previously spread a layer of dry leaves or grass under them. For shelter, you can use a white non-woven fabric.

Important! In the first year of growth, the vine can not be fertilized. The fertilizer rate applied during planting will provide it with nutrients for the first time.

If necessary, clematis can be transplanted to a new location. Before carrying out this procedure, you should decide on the place of the new planting, taking into account the preferences of this vine. To carry out these manipulations, you can choose both autumn and spring periods. When choosing, one must be guided by the peculiarities of the climate of the region where the transplant is made.

Only by following all the recommendations and planting rules can the death or disease of the plant be avoided. Also, a newly planted clematis needs regular care and shelter for the winter in the year of transplantation. If everything was done correctly, the next year clematis will delight you not only with the growth of new shoots, but also with lush flowering.
