How to transplant peonies, and how to plant them in spring
Content:
Flowers such as peonies will adorn any yard. To admire them for as long as possible, you need to take into account all the features of caring for the bushes. These shrubs are most common among gardeners and summer residents, so they grow in almost all amateurs. In order for the bushes to grow and bloom longer, you need to know how to transplant peonies and do it at the right time.
Why do you need a transplant
Pros of the plant:
- a popular spring flower that is most often found in flower beds;
- bright aroma;
- variety of color palette;
- splendor of flowering;
- ease of caring for him (not capricious, does not require close attention, frequent watering and too nutritious soil).
Even if these shrub plants have been properly planted and have grown successfully for a long time, sooner or later they may need to change their location.
What factors indicate that it is time to transplant homemade peonies:
- lack of enough space. After all, every year this plant occupies more and more territory, which can interfere with neighboring crops and lead to a deterioration in the flowering of the shrub. What to do? Plant a bush, while dividing it into several smaller parts, if these are not indoor peonies, which will be discussed in another article;
- long growing season. A similar one is found in the peony of the Kelweiss Glorios variety. Due to the long process, there is a risk of contracting certain diseases. In this case, it is possible to detect a lack of nutrients, which significantly affects the growth of the bush;
- the need to change location. At home or in the country, changes sometimes occur: new buildings appear that can interfere with the growth of peonies, or the arrangement of the flower bed simply changes;
- if the flowers have been growing in the same place for about 10 years, then you can notice the shredding of the flowers, which also indicates the need to transplant the plant.
Optimal transplant times
You can transplant peonies at different times.
Spring
When the question arises, how to transplant peonies in the spring, you need to take into account the weather conditions.
At this time of the year, peonies are transplanted by amateurs and novice summer residents, they are planted in flower beds or near houses. How to plant peonies in spring:
- Completely carefully dig up the entire bush, while not separating it, so that it takes root well in a new place. After wintering, thanks to new branches, this happens much faster. It is worth doing this not earlier than the snow melts and up to a temperature of 5-7 ° C.
- Prepare a pit with loose and nutritious soil in advance with the addition of manure or compost. Don't add organic food.
- It is not necessary to remove the soil completely from the roots. The process should be as accurate as possible. The bush is placed in a hole and covered with earth.
- In a new place, it is necessary to tie up a bush, compact the earth and water abundantly.
- Caring for peonies in a new place will not differ from the previous one.
How to plant in autumn
If the question of how to transplant peonies in the spring did not dare, you can do this procedure in August (at the very end). This month is also favorable, as the weather is still warm and there is no heavy rainfall. However, the preparation of the pit should be started in spring. For such a long time, she will definitely be ready to transplant flowers into her. The soil should be composed of sand with earth and compost.
Standing rainwater is suitable for irrigation.
Guide to action:
- With a pitchfork, dig out a bush, carefully removing the roots from the underground part.
- If necessary, thin out, remove to excess roots: rotten, damaged during digging, etc.
- For the rapid growth of a new plant, at least 6 buds are required on the roots.
- Before planting in a new hole, the roots of the peony are washed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, disinfected from microbes. The same applies to inventory.
- The root is placed at a depth of 20-30 cm, covered with earth and compacted, watered abundantly.
Both transplants are relevant: in the spring the roots have not yet entered the active growth phase, and in the fall they have already left it.
How to grow peonies at home using the seed method
This type of reproduction of peonies is not very popular, because it has a number of disadvantages:
- seeds do not retain the properties of varieties;
- many varieties do not give seeds after flowering (only 10% of varieties have ways to do this);
- even if it was possible to grow, flowering will come in 4-5 years.
What seeds to choose for planting
For example, Gardenia peony seeds ripen by fall. You need to choose not hard and not dry, but full with shine, otherwise the peony will rise only after 3 years. It is necessary to have time to collect the planting material before mid-September, because the cold introduces the seeds into a drowsy state, and their germination will be impossible.
There is another way to germinate seeds. It needs warm stratification, the procedure is carried out in winter. The pot with sand and seeds in it is heated to 30 ° C for 6 hours, and then kept at a temperature of 17-18 ° C for 3-4 hours. The process is repeated many times, while moisturizing. Sprouted peony seeds are carefully removed and dived into small containers to a depth of 5 mm. In the spring, they are sown in open ground to a depth of 5 cm, while feeding with urea.
How to propagate a tree peony at home
Reproduction of tree peonies occurs in several ways:
- dividing the bush;
- air layering;
- cuttings;
- vaccination;
- growing from seeds.
The reproduction process using cuttings is carried out in the middle of summer. Shoots with buds and leaves are separated from the healthiest bush. Then they are placed in a peat substrate under plastic glasses. Two months later, the cuttings are planted in pots, creating the same greenhouse conditions, and kept until spring. Then they are transplanted into a flower bed.
To apply the method of propagation by layering, a good shoot is selected from the bush, pressed to the ground, for example, with wire, and covered with soil.
Reproduction by grafting is a complex process that sometimes is beyond the power of flower growers. An incision is made in the previously selected root (it is torn from the side of the bush very carefully so as not to damage), the graft is inserted into it. The hole is filled with sawdust. Then it remains to wait for seedlings. When they appear, you can finally dig up and transplant to the chosen place. The most suitable time for this method is the end of summer.
Seeds are propagated by peonies by breeders, since the actions must be followed in strict sequence. You should be able to select the freshest seeds as described above. If everything is done correctly, then the peony will rise not earlier than in 2-3 years, and will begin to bloom in five years.
The division of the bush is used only when the plant is more than 5 years old. The bushes are carefully dug out, the roots are washed and divided into several parts so that each has three shoots.
The course of action will be considered using the example of the lactic-flowered peony Gardenia. In the fall, the bush is covered with spruce legs and dry leaves to raise immunity in winter. The next year, the bushes can be planted, but this should only be done before August.
For planting, you must choose an open and sunny area without drafts. From a strong shade, the plant will give poor flowering. Also, there should be no other plantings, this will only harm both sides.
For transplantation, the mother bush is removed from the ground, the roots are divided into the required amount. They dig a hole 70 cm deep in the right place, loosen the bottom, fill it in by a third with top dressing. The roots of the resulting cut are straightened in the pit carefully, and the earth is not compacted, it should settle by itself.
The first two seasons after planting are not required. Young bushes will have enough nutrients that were introduced during planting. Peony flowering can be achieved without various additives.
A peony of this variety always requires a moist post, especially in the spring before flowering. Watering is usually carried out once every 7-10 days.
Care
There should be enough water, but not much. During flowering, you need to water more often so that the flowers are brighter. After completing this process, you need to return to the previous watering mode.
However, one should not forget about the diseases from which peonies can suffer. You need to be able to identify the disease in order to fight with suitable means. For example, gray mold spreads on stems and buds, while powdery mildew damages the leaves. As a treatment, a solution of copper sulfate or soap is used, and the affected leaves and stems are removed.
With constant careful care, peonies grow and bloom every year, have a fresh look, bright aroma and large buds.
Thus, the reproduction and transplantation of various types of peonies is not a quick process, sometimes even complicated. But the plants themselves are not capricious, you just have to observe the correct actions in the care.
