general information
The rhododendron was first described in the middle of the 17th century. The name “rosewood” was not derived from its resemblance to roses, but from its rich pink color, the shades of which change as the entire flowering continues. Nevertheless, by 2019 varieties of rhododendron have been bred, the color of which can be both dark red and lilac. Speckled varieties also appeared.
Brought rhododendrons from mountain peaks. Depending on the variety, the height of the shrub can vary from 10 cm to 10 m. More than 15 species of rhododendron are found on the territory of Russia. Some of these shrubs have medicinal properties, while the honey of others can poison a person.
Rhododendron Yakushimansky (Yakushimansky - the second spelling) was brought to Russia and Europe from Japan, from the island of Yakushima. A characteristic feature of this variety is frost resistance. Many varieties can withstand up to -30 ° C. The shrub reaches 100 cm in height, 150 cm in width.
Rhododendron is evergreen, and has another characteristic characteristic of its subspecies: when cold weather sets in, its leaves roll into a tube. This is the plant's defensive reaction against hypothermia.

Description of planting and caring for shrubs
Unlike other species of this plant, the Yakushimansky rhododendron blooms much brighter and more intensely. In addition, this type of plant is more resistant to diseases and low temperatures. Moreover, the Yakushimansky rhododendron is a medicinal plant. Tincture from its leaves is used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, epilepsy, colds.
When decorating a garden or summer cottage, this shrub will become irreplaceable and relevant for any design incarnations. Rhododendron is great for rock gardens, hedges making. Also fits perfectly into the framing of a decorative pond.
This beautiful and useful shrub reproduces in several ways:
- layering;
- seeds;
- cuttings;
- division of the root system.
For plant propagation by layering, it is necessary to cut the lower branch in early spring and place it in a nutritious soil. By the middle of summer, the prepared branch will give roots. Then you can separate it from the bush and bury it in a new place of residence.
The seeds are prepared from the previous season and planted in the spring. Pre-soaked in water.
Cutting takes place in the traditional way - twigs 5-10 cm long with several buds are cut and placed in a nutrient medium.
The division of the root system should take place with minimal damage. After separation, the plant bounces back within 2-3 years.
An earthen lump should be preserved on the planting material. Before planting, it must be placed in water for a few minutes.But if the buds have already appeared on the seedling, then after planting they must be pinched off.
Rhododendron prefers acidic soil. If you are not sure that this is exactly what the site is, you can acidify it yourself with the help of fertilizers. Most varieties do not like places that are too sunny or windy. The sun can burn the bush and wither away. The root system of the plant is superficial, therefore it is impossible to loosen it in any case. Weeds must also be removed carefully.
Watering an adult shrub should be 2-3 times a week, abundantly. Can be mulched with sawdust. The plant is usually fed three times per season.
It is not necessary to cover the shrub for the winter, the varieties of the Yakushimansky rhododendron are winter-hardy. In rare cases, they need to cover the roots with spruce branches.
The plant is resistant to external irritants and is little susceptible to diseases and pest attacks. With proper care, rhododendron will be healthy and disease resistant. But sometimes the shrub can be attacked by pests - bugs and spider mites can cause some inconvenience. You can get rid of them with specialized means, for example Diazinon or Keltan emulsion.
Also, troubles are possible due to improper care of the plant. Signs such as falling buds or poor leaf development indicate a violation of the irrigation system. In the first case, it means that the plant is thirsty, in the second, it is flooded. If the flowering is weak and not lush, this means that the rhododendron needs minerals.
With proper care, the design of the site will be decorated with shrubs of extraordinary beauty for many years. And it will certainly become the envy of all friends and neighbors.
