Content:
When decorating a garden plot, you should pay attention to one of the most attractive types of garden jasmines - virginal mock-orange or maiden mock-orange. This plant has delicate decorative flowers and more than a century of history.
Description Chubushnik virginal
Philadelphus virginal is a variety of garden jasmine, which is a shrub with straight branches, reaching a height of about 3 m. The bush is fairly wide and reaches the same dimensions in width as in height.
The foliage densely covering the branches is rather large - about 7 cm long. The juicy color of greenery in the spring-summer vegetation period is replaced by a yellow color in autumn, and subsequently falls off.
The flowers are snow-white, up to 5 cm in diameter. Flowers are collected in inflorescences of 8-10 pieces. In comparison with other varieties, the crown mock-mushroom virginal has a rather persistent and strong aroma.
Flowering begins with the onset of summer and lasts about one month.
Planting a plant
Planting begins with the acquisition of a seedling.
After it is purchased, you need to prepare the landing site.
A sufficiently illuminated area is best suited - it is such a place that will allow the plant to develop well, bloom intensively and give abundant greenery.
In the absence of such a place, you can choose a slightly shaded area.
Planting from seeds
If there is a desire to plant mock-mushroom virginal by sowing seeds into the ground, you should pay attention to the fact that the seeds should be planted in cups. It is necessary to grow seedlings and only then, upon reaching a certain size, transplant them to a permanent place. It is also taken into account that in this case it will be possible to see flowers only for 5-7 years of the growth of the bush. That is why this type of planting is less popular.
Planting seedlings in open ground
It's easier to buy rooted cuttings right away. Although they can be removed on their own, if you cut off the green branches from the plant, around the month of June.
Another option for your own harvesting is to cut a branch in the fall. In order for it not to germinate ahead of time, it is stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag.
Before burying the shanks in the ground, they must be soaked in a growth stimulant solution. This will allow the root system to form faster.
Whenever cuttings are cut, they need to provide a suitable soil.
Vaginal chubushnik loves rather loose soils. Therefore, the twigs are buried either in sand or in loose sandy soil. In this case, the soil should be sufficiently warm and moist. Therefore, if the weather is not warm enough, then planting should be done in a sheltered ground or room.
Cuttings will become full-fledged seedlings only after a year.
Another breeding option is layering. It is suitable only if there is already a mature bush on the site. He just needs to bend a branch from the main bush of garden jasmine and bury it with a little earth. After that, pour abundantly and cover with mulch.
How to care for Chubushnik virginal
Despite the fact that the plant is relatively unpretentious, it still needs certain conditions and care. Only in this case, the garden variety of jasmine will delight you with abundant and massive flowering and wrap it up with a pleasant aroma.
Watering
In order to properly water the plant, you should adhere to the following rules:
- the water should be warm enough - it is better to keep the container in the sun for at least 1-2 hours, it is especially important to do this in the spring, when the air has not yet warmed up well enough;
- water must be defended if it is taken from the tap;
- one adult bush needs about 20-30 liters of water;
- since the plant is quite demanding on the amount of water, then in the spring it is necessary to water it twice a week, and during flowering and intense heat - daily;
- before watering, the soil must be loosened.
Top dressing
Chubushnik philadelphus virginal must be fed in order for the flowers to form abundantly on the bush. As a top dressing, you can choose complex mineral fertilizers that are suitable for flowering plants.
It is necessary to apply top dressing twice: in early spring and when buds are tied on the bush. In winter or late autumn, in order to support the bush for the next year, it is necessary to add organic matter to the soil.
Pruning
Pruning Lemoine virginal is also necessary to ensure proper care.
After flowering, you will need to remove all inflorescences from the bush. And if the bush is very overgrown, then during the same period you can cut off weak and unhealthy branches.
In the spring, before the leaves bloom on the bush, it is necessary to remove the frozen shoots and branches.
Reproduction methods
If you need to rejuvenate the bush, then layering or dividing the bush is best. In all other cases, cuttings or seeds are used. If you do not want to mess around with cuttings on your own, then you need to buy an adult seedling in the nursery.
Diseases and pests
The description of the virginal mock-orange always indicates that it can often be attacked by such diseases and pests as:
- leaf weevil green;
- spider mite;
- bean aphid.
The most effective is the use of insecticides. But, if there is no desire to use chemistry, then you can use folk remedies. Companion plants that repel the above pests are very effective. These include:
- tansy;
- yarrow;
- sagebrush;
- marigold;
- dandelion;
- potatoes;
- tomatoes;
- yarrow.
Preparing for winter
To prepare the plant for winter, it must be wrapped in agrofibre.But this is only true for young bushes. This is not necessary for mature plants. If the frosts in winter are still strong enough, then you can mulch the area under the bush with any suitable material or peat.
If, nevertheless, it is planned to perform strapping in agrofibre, then the branches must first be tied up so that they go vertically upwards and do not tear the material.
When heavy precipitation falls in the form of snow, the snow mass must be brought under the bush. This will provide protection against freezing of the root system.
Use in landscape design
Double jasmine flowers look great on their own. Moreover, the bush is quite massive. But, it can also be a great addition to other plants, decorating flower beds and becoming an excellent backdrop for an alpine slide. Different plant varieties can be selected for different purposes, including the schneesturm jasmine variety. Some varieties can be more compact, others are larger and more double flowers.
Regardless of which variety is chosen, one thing is certain - garden jasmine will become the highlight of the garden. The difficulty of leaving is medium. The plant is hardy enough to grow in temperate climates.
