Chubushnik Lemoine - description, planting and care
Content:
The plant world is truly huge. In addition to varieties of natural origin, there are many hybrid varieties. Scientists have spent a lot of time to obtain the latter. One of the brightest representatives of this work is Lemoine's chubushnik, who has absorbed all his best qualities.
Description
Chubushnik Lemoine is a beautiful shrub plant that belongs to the Hortensiev family. This hybrid category appeared in the 19th century thanks to the breeder from France V. Lemoine (Lemoine). Most common in Europe and North America. The plant is a lush bush reaching 3 meters in height. It is often confused with jasmine, but apart from the pleasant scent of flowers, there are no similarities. Lanceolate egg-shaped leaves reach a length of 4 centimeters. Inflorescences are represented by brushes, which are collected large white flowers. Each inflorescence has 5-7 flowers.
The most popular plants are:
- mock orange Glacier;
- chubushnik Charm;
- chubushnik Snow storm.
Planting a plant
The seeds are soaked in water for several hours. After that, they are placed in moistened sawdust for 2 days. Wrap them in a light cloth before soaking. After swelling and germination, the seeds can be prepared for planting. In the chubushnik, they are small, so before planting it is best to mix them with sand, and then place them in pre-prepared grooves and cover them with peat. Planting is also possible in the fall: for this, seeds are placed in the prepared grooves and covered with dried grass. Shoots should appear in the spring.
This representative of the plant world feels great in areas with light partial shade. Completely shaded areas are undesirable, since the branches in them will begin to stretch out, and the bush itself will lose its decorative effect and compactness.
Planting seedlings in open ground
The optimal planting time is spring or autumn. In the second case, at least 20 days should remain until frost, otherwise the bush will not be able to take root until the cold weather arrives.
Chubushnik is undemanding to soil conditions. Only it should not be placed on swampy or saline soil. The landing pit is prepared in advance. Its size is 50x60 centimeters. At the bottom there must be a drainage layer and a mixture of garden soil with sand, humus or compost. The additives depend on the type of soil. When planting several specimens, the distance between the pits should be in the region of 1-1.5 meters.
How to care for Lemoine's chubushnik
Watering
Proper watering is essential for good development of the shrub. Young chubushniki need hydration once a week. Adult specimens are watered with 15-25 liters of water. Frequency - once every 18-20 days. These recommendations are especially important during dry summers. If a period of heavy rains has begun, then watering stops. After moistening, loosen the soil and remove weeds.
Top dressing
A balanced fertilization option is a solution of manure in water (1 in 10).This dressing is applied in the spring. One bucket is poured under the bush. At the end of the flowering period, wood ash is poured and leveled under the bush.
The proportions of fertilizers are as follows: for each bucket of water, 30 grams of superphosphate is used, as well as 15 grams of potassium sulfate and urea. This volume will be enough for 2 adult chubushniki. At the end of the flowering period, 15 g of potassium sulfate and 25 g of superphosphate are applied per square meter.
Pruning
Pruning of the chubushnik should be carried out regularly, otherwise the plant will lose its beauty and cease to delight with its lush flowering. The fact is that flowers appear on strong and healthy branches of last year. Flowers may appear on old or diseased branches, but they will be faded and small. Because of this feature, pruning is carried out after flowering is complete. Dead branches are removed before the young shoots of this year. Most often they are located below the branches being cut.
Sanitary pruning is carried out in autumn. Sick, damaged branches are removed, as well as branches that make the bush too thick. Branches that are more than 12 years old are cut once every 3 years. This rejuvenating procedure is carried out in early spring, before the sap flow begins. Strong trunks are shortened to 30 centimeters, and all others are shortened to ground level.
Reproduction
Chubushnik lemoinei reproduces well vegetatively. Seed propagation is also possible, but the use of this method is highly questionable. Flowering in such a plant begins only 5 or 6 years after planting in a permanent habitat, which is very bad. As for varietal traits and seed germination, everything is not very good here either. Seeds, as a rule, rarely retain their parental and varietal characteristics, and their germination capacity is low and short-lived.
The best option are the following breeding methods:
- cuttings;
- layering;
- division.
Cuttings
With the beginning of the first month of summer, green cuttings are cut off from the chubushnik and they are rooted. When cutting, the green shoot must be left with part of the branch of last year's growth. 2 pairs of leaves should remain on the handle. The upper ones are trimmed by 1/3 or 1/2, and the lower ones are removed completely.
Planting material can be made in the fall. After that, it is placed in a regular bag and sent to the refrigerator until spring. Starting from the 2nd half of March, blanks 5 centimeters long are cut from these shoots. After that, they need to be kept in a solution of a root-forming stimulant for one day.
For rooting, cuttings must be buried in sandy soil or sand in the open air. Another option is to use a pot. Good rooting will require warmth, soil, and high humidity air. To achieve all these conditions, a mini greenhouse will do.
Rooted cuttings will make excellent seedlings by the spring of next year.
Diversion method
This breeding method is the most famous and easy. In the spring, when the ground has already warmed up enough, you can start breeding shrubs. This process can be presented in the following sequence:
- it is necessary to bend the selected branch to the ground;
- in the place where it best lies on the ground, remove the bark 1 cm wide in a ring-like manner;
- attach the layering to the soil with a wire arc;
- cover with earth, moisten and mulch.
Dividing the bush
This breeding method is rare - it is relevant only for aged and overgrown bushes. The chubushnik is dug up, and then divided with a sharp knife into several parts, which are then seated. All this is done on a cloudy autumn day.
Diseases and pests
Chubushnik is a plant resistant to diseases. Problems with it can arise from harmful insects.
The most frequent guests on the plant:
- bean aphid;
- spider mite;
- green leaf weevil.
To exterminate aphids, drugs Karbofos or Rogor are used, according to the instructions.
To get rid of a spider mite, you need a 3% Keltan emulsion or a 2% Phosphamide solution. These products should be sprayed on the plants and the soil under them. Frequency - 2-3 times with a break per week.
Preparing for winter
When the chubushnik has faded, it is prepared for wintering. Autumn pruning is carried out: diseased and thick branches are removed. After that, the mock-orange is fed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers and mulched. A thick layer of sawdust or peat is suitable for this.
The plant does not need shelter for the winter. As mentioned earlier, the chubushnik tolerates frosts down to -25 ° C. Even if some of the shoots are frozen, the bush will not die. In the spring, dead shoots are pruned to stimulate the growth of new shoots.
Use in landscape design
You can achieve harmony in landscape design by combining a mock orange with hydrangea, viburnum or turf.
A special place is occupied by dwarf shrubs, such as "Gnome" and "Dwarf". Such varieties are used as living borders, as well as edging flower beds and mixborders.
Chubushniki "Abundance", "Daisy", "Avalanche" look very good in flower beds and mixborders. It is logical to use them in sensory gardens - gardens of scent, because of the wonderful scent of flowers.
For hedges used varieties "Glacier", "Moonlight", "Obelisk".
Beneficial features
The plant itself is not medicinal, but research is still ongoing. Essential oils, phytoncides, acids, vitamins C, E, PP and a small amount of glycosides were found in the composition of the chubushnik.
As a result, we get a plant with tonic, analgesic, antiseptic and regenerating properties. There are several recipes for traditional medicine with this plant, but it is better to consult with a knowledgeable specialist before using it.
Thus, chubushnik is an amazing plant. Each of the species has a whole bunch of varieties, so choosing a plant for your goals is not difficult. Beautiful blooms and amazing aroma will not leave plant lovers on the sidelines!
