Planting and caring for a round thuja
When choosing a place for planting thujas, it is worth giving preference to the shaded areas in the east.If you grow a globular perennial in a completely shaded area, the crown will begin to thin out and the branches will stretch out. When growing plants in regions with short daylight hours, it is worth planting the bushes in a well-lit area.
For planting, it is advisable to use fertile soil, which should be slightly moistened.
With a high occurrence of groundwater, a drainage layer is laid on the surface of the bottom of the planting pit, the thickness of which reaches 18-20 cm. Considering that the active growing season begins in May, it is better to carry out planting work at the end of March or in October.
It is necessary to prepare the pit for planting in a few days. The deepening is moistened and filled with self-prepared soil, consisting of:
- peat;
- sand;
- fertile soil.
It is advisable to add a small amount of nitroammophoska to the soil. Plants that are more than 2 years old must be transplanted together with a clod of earth on the root system.
The root collar must not be buried. It should rise above the ground. In the first weeks after planting seedlings, it is important to water them abundantly every day. 15 liters of water are poured under each bush. It is very important to protect the seedlings from direct sunlight. It is advisable to shade the bushes with a spandbond or a sunscreen type mesh.
Watering and loosening
Thuja globular is capable of enduring dry periods. However, the lack of moisture negatively affects the appearance of the crown, which begins to thin and dry out.
A couple of months after planting the seedlings, the frequency of watering can be reduced to 2 times a week. For each perennial, you will need to pour 12-15 liters of water. On hot days, it is necessary to increase the frequency of soil moistening up to 4 times a week. After the liquid is absorbed into the ground, you should begin to loosen the soil.
- compost;
- shavings;
- peat.
Preparing for winter
An adult plant can even endure a frosty winter. Young bushes must be covered with a layer of spruce branches and fallen leaves at the end of October. As soon as the temperature drops below 0, the perennial is wrapped in a film material.
Pruning
To maintain the spherical shape of the bushes, there is no need to prune. However, to rejuvenate the spherical thuja, it is necessary to systematically carry out the procedure of sanitary pruning, during which all dead and diseased branches are removed.
Top dressing
Globular thuja grow rather slowly. Top dressing is applied very carefully. It is advisable to apply the first fertilizer 24 months after planting the bushes. To this end, it is worth using complex fertilizers for thuja.
Reproduction
For propagation of thuja globular, the grafting method is used. The breeding procedure is performed in the autumn months. It is very important to ensure a high humidity level in the greenhouse during the breeding season, which will be in the range of 78-80%. In order for the cuttings to receive a sufficient amount of sunlight, it is worth giving preference to greenhouses covered with transparent film material.
As cuttings, woody shoots can be used, the length of which reaches 40-50 cm. The lower part of the shoots is cleaned of needles and processed in Kornevin's solution. Each cutting is planted in fertile soil to a depth of 2.5 cm. The cuttings are systematically ventilated and moistened with a spray bottle. After 4 weeks, root formation can be noted.
Why do spherical thuja turn yellow
Thuja needles can turn yellow for various reasons. Below are the most common ones:
- Iron deficiency in the soil can cause yellowing or whitening of the needles.
- The impact on the plant of the thuja miner moth. Having cut the damaged needles, we carefully examine their lumen. It is there that the larvae of the pest can be found.
- The defeat of the plant by a spider mite. Thin cobwebs on the needles can indicate a pest invasion. The needles not only turn yellow at the same time, but also crumble abundantly.
Thuja spherical is an amazing plant that fits perfectly into any design. In order to grow your bushes healthy, it is important to provide them with proper care and timely treatment when needed.
Often, spherical bushes are combined with Bodhi thuja, the description of which confirms the unpretentiousness of the coniferous plantation and its exquisite appearance. Everyone can afford to decorate their garden with such plants.
