Rose Robusta (Robusta) - description of a varietal bush
Content:
The ancestor of the Robusta rose is an old variety - the Rugosa rose. This wonderful variety was bred in a German nursery in 1979, by the Kordes family of breeders, who first described a new kind of roses - Robusta. Today there are more than 20,000 different types of roses, differing in appearance, flowering duration and growing conditions. Rosa Robusta is the most unpretentious and long-flowering variety, and that is why it is very popular among those engaged in breeding.
Rose Robusta description and characteristics
Rose Robusta is a small bush that is only 1.5 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. What makes this variety different from others?
Among the main characteristics and features, several can be distinguished:
- This variety is characterized by rich, bright green, large leaves, which serve as a kind of frame for the variegated buds of the Robusta rose.
- The buds are not double, scarlet, symmetrical with a small bunch of stamens, which are difficult to see. They open from elongated buds, on which short brushes appear later, producing from 5 to 10 flowers.
- Abundant and continuous flowering. It starts in the middle of spring and ends with the first frost. The buds are not harmed by direct sunlight or rain.
Advantages and disadvantages
Rose Robusta does not differ in any significant drawbacks that could complicate the care of the plant. At the same time, this flower has a whole list of virtues, thanks to which it has gained such widespread fame.
Here is some of them:
- continuous flowering;
- excellent survival rate even in poor soil;
- resistance to any weather conditions;
- frost resistance;
- resistance to fungal infections.
Use in landscape design
Rosa Robusta belongs to garden and park crops. It is convenient to use in any type of green building, including:
- creation of a hedge;
- container culture;
- single landings;
- vertical gardening;
- planting in groups with both roses and other plants;
- decoration of borders, flower beds and rocky gardens.
Self-cultivation of Robusta rose
In addition to the scarlet park Rose Robusta, there is also Pink Robusta, which has no significant differences. Larger buds are pink in color and the size of the shrub is slightly lower than that of the scarlet beauty. Although the differences are not significant, novice gardeners still have the question of whether there is a difference in the agricultural technology used when planting different Robusta shrubs. The growing and planting process is not significantly different.
Rose Robusta is relatively tolerant to arid climates and not whimsical in terms of soil.But for the best decorative effect, it is worth choosing a place with a sufficient amount of light and partial partial shade. It is necessary to pay attention to the soil agrophone. The soil should be medium loamy. You can use the following mixtures:
- humus, turf and sand - 2: 2: 1;
- turf, humus, sand and deciduous soil - 1: 1: 1: 1.
As a rule, planting is done in the spring.
Standard agricultural technology:
- A few hours before planting, Rosa Robusta is placed in a root growth stimulant solution.
- A hole is dug about 60 cm deep, about 70 cm in diameter.
- A drainage layer is laid out on the bottom. It can be expanded clay or other small stones.
- The seedling is carefully placed in the hole so that all the roots look down, after which it is gradually covered with earth.
The last stage of planting is mulching the soil in a circle and over-watering.
Park rose care
In order to provide proper care for the bushes, no complicated steps are required.
Watering
Robusta needs to be watered only once every 10 days, but at the same time it is quite abundant - about 1.5-2 buckets per adult plant. Watering is carried out at the root within a radius of 20-50 cm from the base of the bush. The earth lump should not dry out. Approximately 5 days after watering, the land around you should be loosened for better air permeability.
Land cultivation
A trunk circle within a radius of 60 cm needs timely weed removal and weeding.
Fertilizer
Robusta rose responds very well to fertilization. The main fertilizers are compost and humus. Such top dressing takes place once a year in the first half of summer; this is done by mulching, followed by introduction into the ground during loosening.
Do not forget about liquid feeding, which is done 2 times a season, the first time in May, and the second in August. For this, a mullein is used, diluted in 100 liters of water and infused for 2 weeks. Approximately 10 liters of this infusion is applied under one bush.
Prophylaxis
In order to avoid infection of the shrub during a period of high humidity, preventive spraying with fungicides is carried out no more than once every 3 weeks.
Pruning
Pruning is usually done after wintering in May, after the young leaves have unfolded. Anything that has been damaged by frost is removed or is simply cut dry to healthy wood. A park rose needs rejuvenating pruning at the age of 5-9 years. For this, all trunks older than 5 years are removed at the root. This should be done in the fall, from September to October.
Transfer
The most favorable period for transplanting a Robusta rose is early spring or late autumn. A transplant at another time does not have very pleasant consequences. But if there is an urgent need, then it will be necessary to help the plant to take root in a new place.
Preparation for wintering
Despite the fact that the Robusta rose has good frost resistance, it is still worth helping it cope with the cold weather. Although the bushes are pruned before wintering, you still cannot shorten the branches too much - this can weaken the plant, and the rose simply will not survive the winter period.
To prepare for cold weather over an adult bush, you can create a simple ground structure made of polyethylene or any other non-fabric material. Younger plants just need to be bent to the ground and covered tightly with spruce branches.
Flowering and dormant period
Robusta begins to bloom in May, and after the first buds appear, it continuously generates new flowers. The most active flowering time occurs in mid-August - early September, and in the absence of cold weather, flowering will be pleasing to the eye in October. From this it turns out that the total flowering time lasts as much as 4-5 months.
The most important aspects in caring for a park rose during the flowering period are timely weeding and loosening of the soil. The petals of the buds do not wither, but crumble, so the rose bush will look attractive even in the process of flowering, which cannot be said about the dense double park roses.
Why does not a rose bloom
There are several reasons why a rose may not bloom:
- First year after planting. The plant may not bloom at all. It depends on the starting material used for planting. In the first year, it is better not to let Robusta bloom in order for it to take root as best as possible.
- Improper care. The rose is quite demanding on living conditions, it needs additional nutrition, as well as timely treatment against pests or diseases. If the bush has already begun to shed its leaves and looks painful, most likely, you can not wait for flowering. However, the plant should not be "overfeeded" either, since overfeeding gives enough strength to the foliage, and the flowering becomes rather scarce.
- Incorrect cropping. Do not subject Robusta to heavy pruning or try to form a "small bush" - this will weaken the plant. Such actions lead to a shift in the flowering time, since the rose will need to recover from such procedures.
Reproduction of Robusta park rose
This type of rose is grown using its own root method. Propagate it using green cuttings. To do this, they are cut at the beginning of lignification, 15-20 cm long, and dipped in a solution that promotes the rapid growth of the root system. After these actions, the cutting with the root is planted in a moistened soil fed with fertilizer.
Park rose, pests and diseases
This type of rose is notable for its persistent immunity, but sometimes you can face some difficulties:
- Aphids are an insect that feeds on wiry and succulent plants. Aphids especially often attack in summer. Most often, Karbofos or Fitoverm is used to combat this pest.
- Powdery mildew is a disease that affects the entire terrestrial part of the plant. Occurs in extremely humid conditions. Outwardly, it is quite easy to identify the disease, since it looks like a white-gray bloom on flowers and foliage. To effectively get rid of the disease, a fungicide is used.
- Rust. A bacterium that infects leaves. Outwardly, it looks like the foliage is covered with rusty spots. A fungicide does an excellent job with this bacterium.
Despite the fact that the park rose Robusta red is not very whimsical, during planting it is better to follow the instructions described above. Nevertheless, everyone can cope with caring for this truly beautiful garden plant. Therefore, if you have a garden or a place for a small bush, you should plant Robusta, because it is she who can perfectly decorate a cozy corner in a small yard.
