Cinquefoil Goldfinger - description, planting and care

Due to its unpretentiousness, the Goldfinger cinquefoil is often used to decorate garden and backyard territories. The bush is small in size and during the flowering period it is covered with small beautiful flowers of white, yellow or pink color. You can plant a plant both in open ground and in pots on loggias or balconies. Goldfinger's cinquefoil is suitable for creating interesting landscape compositions.

Description Potentilla Goldfinger

The culture grows slowly and does not need to be constantly looked after, so gardeners use it as a hedge. In height, the plant can reach no more than 1.5 meters, and the growth in 20 years is no more than 30 cm.

Shrub Potentilla Goldfinger

The leaves of the shrub are thin, the crown is rounded. Goldfinger blooms can last from early spring to late autumn, which is why it is used for decorative landscaping.

When planting a shrub, it must be borne in mind that its root system is poorly developed, therefore, it is impossible to deeply deepen the plant into the ground. The maximum allowable depth is 80 cm. The bush adapts well in humid climates, tolerates frost well, but does not like drought.

Interesting! Cinquefoil is resistant to smoke and gas, so it can be planted even near a busy road.

Planting a plant

Cinquefoil Roldfinger prefers partial shade rather than being in direct sunlight. Some varieties can fade in the sun, but will not develop in absolute shade.

If you plan to breed a plant with seeds, then before sowing they should be kept for some time in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Since the seeds are very small and weak, they are sown over the ground, and then lightly sprinkled with earth. After that, the culture must be watered abundantly with water, and after 20 days it will be possible to admire the first shoots.

Important! It is necessary to sow Potentilla seeds in March.

The grown seedlings with leaves can be planted in cups. Planting in the ground is carried out only at the end of summer, when the plant is well developed.

When planting in open ground, the distance between the plants should be at least 30 cm. For the winter period, Potentilla must be covered.

How to care for Goldfinger Potentilla

The plant is unpretentious, so it is easy to care for it.

Watering

Cinquefoil loves high humidity. The plant needs to be regularly watered, especially in dry weather. It is enough to water it twice a month, 15 liters for each bush.

Important! It is necessary to water the plant with water slightly warmed up in the sun, because cold water can destroy the plant.

Top dressing

Special fertilizers for the plant are not produced, but complex fertilizers for ornamental plants are suitable. At the beginning of the growing season, the shrub is fed with mineral fertilizers, before flowering - with potassium and phosphorus, and by autumn - also with mineral fertilizers.

Pruning

Goldfinger cinquefoil is pruned once every 3-5 years. It is important to give the bush the correct shape. To do this, each branch is cut by a third or half. Broken or dry branches are cut off completely.

Shrub formation

Important! Potentilla pruning is carried out in September or April.

Reproduction methods

The plant is bred in one of three ways: by dividing the bush, cuttings or seeds.

Dividing the bush

The procedure is carried out in the spring. The bush is dug up, the roots are washed under running water and, using a knife, they are divided into several parts. Each resulting bush should have growth buds.

Cuttings

For this type of reproduction, you need to cut off last year's shoots, remove the lower leaves and process the plant with Kornevin. To maintain the required humidity, the cutting is planted in a shaded place in a greenhouse or under a jar. After 20 days, it can be placed in a permanent place in open ground. It is better to do this in rainy or cloudy weather.

Seeds

The seeds are collected from the bush. They are well dried and cleaned, after which they are put in bags and stored in a dry place. Seeds are sown in the spring.

Transfer

Potentilla can be transplanted from the age of two. Procedure:

  1. The plant is placed in a hole no more than 50 cm deep.
  2. It makes drainage from pebbles, gravel and broken bricks 20 cm thick.
  3. Then humus and sand are poured on top.
  4. A seedling is placed in the prepared hole, mineral fertilizer is added and sprinkled with earth.

Important! It is impossible to cover the neck of the root with earth, it must be on the surface.

Diseases and pests

Cinquefoil shrub Goldfinger is resistant to diseases, especially if preventive maintenance is carried out periodically. Pests do not like shrubs, and try to bypass it.

Occasionally, you can see something like rust on the leaves of a plant - this is a fungal disease. As a result, the leaves and branches begin to dry out. To combat the fungus, a fungicide and a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid are used.

Flowering period

Potentilla bloom lasts from June to late autumn. Sometimes it happens that snow still covers a flowering plant. For this reason, this shrub is often used for decorative garden design. For lush flowering, cinquefoil is best placed in a well-lit area, but then you will definitely need to water it abundantly.

Preparing for winter

The big advantage of Potentilla is that it does not need to be specially prepared for frost. With growth, it becomes stronger and easily tolerates even the most severe cold.

Important! Sometimes the tops of the bush can freeze from frost, then in the spring they just need to be cut.

The greatest danger to the flower is the thaw, as a result of which the buds awaken, but the newly struck frosts can destroy them. To avoid this, before the onset of cold weather, the soil under the plant must be mulched with a thick layer.

Use in landscape design

Goldfinger's cinquefoil will be a great addition to any garden arrangement. You can make a hedge from this shrub, decorate an alpine hill with it. It is also cultivated as a single plant or to decorate a flower garden.

The plant is highly resistant to frost and disease. However, the choice of a place for planting it must be approached seriously so that the shrub will please with its flowering for a long time.
