Black rose - is there in nature, as they say, varieties
Content:
The black rose is mysterious and attractive. Psychologists claim that this color is the color of mystery, while artists consider it neutral and elegant. But are there such unique flowers in nature?
Black rose: description of the variety of flowers
In the nature of a flower, a black rose does not exist. Plants growing in natural conditions can have any shades, with the exception of black and blue, since they completely lack such pigment genes. As for the labors of breeders, unsuccessful experiments on breeding black roses have been conducted since 1870. The result of long-term work was only the appearance of maroon, dark crimson and dark purple shades.
A bush of roses of this color has a height of at least 71 cm, and a width of up to 1.7 m. The leaves are green with tints of red and black. The buds are medium or large in size, and the shape is goblet or spherical. The stems are equipped with sharp thorns in large numbers, but in some species they are practically absent.
Can a dark rose be called black
Flowers with a dark shade are usually called black. Whether this position is fair, each person must decide for himself, but still it is worth remembering that the black queen of flowers does not exist in nature.
How dark rose varieties were bred
Dark roses don't have a long history. The first mentions of them are associated with the ancient Turkish city of Halferi, it was here that flowers first appeared, the petals of which were really black. Breeders successfully crossed them with other species, thanks to which they managed to bring out the long-awaited variety with an admixture of burgundy and purple hues.
Breeding work was resumed in 1870. A successful result was achieved in 1975 by the French company Delbard, thanks to which the world saw the Black Pearl, and in 2000 Malicorne. Other nurseries have also earned a drop of fame, for example, the Meyan company, which in 2004 bred Black Baccarat and the Cordes company, which introduced in 1992 the unique Black Madonna variety.
Famous varieties, description
There are many varieties of dark colored roses. Each of them has a unique look and feel.
Black lady
The German variety is especially popular due to its exquisite appearance, the quality of which deserves special attention. The bush has a lush crown and reaches a medium height. The color of the rose petals is black with a red tint.
Night
Another variety with an exquisite appearance. It was first bred by Irish breeders. There are few thorns on the stems of roses, and they themselves are thin with dark green foliage. Rose petals are velvety and have a black and raspberry hue.
Nigrette
This hybrid tea variety was first bred in Germany. By itself, the bush reaches an average height. The petals are black and burgundy, and their tips are curved outward.
Black magic
The variety was developed by the German company Tantau in 1997. Flowers have endurance, resistance to ailments, and are also frost-resistant and unpretentious. They bloom especially well in dry climates.
The buds have a conical shape, and reach up to 14 cm in diameter. Velvet petals are exquisitely curved downward. Particularly noteworthy is the color: at the very beginning of flowering, the buds have a maroon hue, and by autumn you can see beautiful ebb tides on the petals, which create the effect that the rose is black.
Black Prince
For the first time, the world saw the species at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the efforts of breeders from England. The buds reach up to 9 cm in diameter, their color is dark purple, but the color of the pointed petals shimmers from the middle to the edges, which creates a shimmering effect.
Black lovely
The homeland of the variety is France. The bush reaches medium length, but cannot boast of lush foliage. Rose petals are black, with a red tint, double buds.
Features of breeding black roses
Seedlings of such a plant will bloom perfectly in bright areas, but with one condition: before noon, the sun's rays should fall on the flowers, and in the afternoon - shade. This is explained by the fact that in the shade they bloom worse, but with prolonged exposure to sunlight, the dark color fade.
You can first plant a flower in a pot and only after the first blossoming buds, transplant it into a flower bed.
Crossing varieties
For crossing, it is worth choosing exceptionally healthy and beautiful plants, but it should be borne in mind that not all varieties are crossed with each other. It is required to select only those species that have the same number of chromosomes.
Soil composition
The soil in which the plant will be planted must contain drainage, it is excellent to pass oxygen and water. It should be neither clayey nor sandy, slightly acidic and without active groundwater.
What shades can be obtained during selection
When breeding, you can get purple, blue and blue roses. In this case, it is necessary to take varieties with light colors as a basis and add those that are ultimately desired to be obtained.
Typical growing problems
Almost every gardener sooner or later faces problems when growing roses, which have to be dealt with with the help of chemicals or folk remedies. The most common are the following:
- Green aphid. It is most commonly found early in the season on stem tips or on wildly growing buds.
- Blooming flower. The buds cannot fully open and turn brown.
- Powdery mildew. A white-gray bloom or spot appears on the leaves and stems. If you do not take measures to eliminate, then the fungus covers the plant completely.
The rose is the queen of flowers, and the black rose is a unique species that was obtained as a result of the painstaking work of breeders. A bouquet of such flowers cannot leave anyone indifferent.
