Rosa Don Juan

Roses are rightfully considered the most noble flowers that transform the look of any garden. Many gardeners and landscape designers prefer climbing varieties, one of which is the Don Juan rose.

History of creation

In 1958, the specialists of the Italian company "Malandrone" bred this variety. Over the next decade, Don Juan roses became popular in Europe and America.

Short description

Don Juan - large-flowered roses, belong to climbers and grow in the form of a tall weaving bush. The main shoots reach 3 m in length, with the right care they grow even more. The flowers are massive, up to 12-15 cm in diameter, painted in a cherry red shade.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The Don Juan rose has more advantages than disadvantages. Its main advantage is long and abundant flowering. The flower tolerates cool and wet weather well, and is resistant to diseases. The disadvantages include the presence of large thorns, which complicate the seating process.

Use in landscape design

Bright flowers attract attention and become the center of the garden composition, combined with all annual and perennial flowering plants. In landscape design, climbing roses are used to decorate vertical surfaces: pergolas, garden arches, walls of gazebos and verandas.

How to plant in open ground

Before growing climbing roses, you need to familiarize yourself with the planting rules.

In what form is the landing

Rose planting is carried out in the form of seedlings, which are obtained from an adult bush on their own or purchased in a garden store. It is more difficult to grow a rose from seeds, this laborious process does not always give a 100% result.

Boarding time

It is necessary to plant a rose in open ground in spring or autumn, depending on the climate. Spring planting occurs in April-May and is suitable for regions with cold winters. In the South, planting is carried out in early autumn.

Location selection

During cultivation, when choosing a place for planting, it is necessary to take into account:

  • Roses do not like drafts; you need to choose areas protected from the wind. Landing on the corners of buildings is not allowed - these places are heavily blown;
  • The chosen place should be sufficiently lit, planting a rose in the shade is not allowed;
  • The plant does not like excess moisture, it cannot be planted in wetlands;
  • Near the landing site, there should be a support along which the rose will trail: a wall, a pergola, an arch.

Note! In northern regions with high humidity, it is necessary to drain the soil for a rose and choose places on higher elevations where water will not accumulate.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

Climbing rose Don Juan should grow in fertile soil, which is prepared from humus, turf soil and low-lying peat in equal proportions. The plant does not take root well in soil with high acidity.

Additives are added to such soil to neutralize acids, these are:

  • Slaked lime;
  • Ash;
  • A piece of chalk;
  • Eggshell.

Before planting, the seedlings must be placed in settled water for 24 hours. During the day they should stand in the open air, at night they are taken indoors in case the temperature drops.

Planting procedure step by step

When the place is chosen, the land and seedlings are ready, you can start planting.

What do we have to do:

  1. It is necessary to dig a hole 30-40 cm deep, 60 cm in diameter. The hole should be located at a distance of 30-40 cm from the support along which the rose will curl;
  2. The prepared substrate is poured at the bottom of the pit so that there is free space for the roots;
  3. A seedling is placed in the pit so that its roots are directed to the side opposite to the support. The distance between seedlings should be at least 3 m;
  4. The pit is filled with an earth mixture, compacted by hand. The seedling is poured with 10-15 liters of water.

If it is cool outside at night, the plant is covered with foil. During the day, you need to open it and ventilate the soil.

Important! During planting, you must use garden gloves made of tough and durable material that will protect your hands from thorns.

Plant care

Further care will help the seedlings take root faster, for this it is necessary to properly organize watering and feeding.

Watering rules and humidity

An adult rose is watered as the soil dries, it does not tolerate excess moisture. For 1 adult shrub, 1 bucket of settled warm water is enough. The land around the shrub is mulched with spruce branches or branches.

Top dressing and soil quality

The first year after planting, the rose does not need to be fed. Fertilizers are applied in the 2nd year to improve the quality of the soil.

How to do it correctly:

  1. In the spring, the soil is fertilized with ammonium nitrate;
  2. At the beginning of bud formation, the rose is fed with a complex fertilizer for flowering plants;
  3. At the beginning of flowering, a solution of water and poultry droppings is introduced into the ground in a ratio of 15: 1. Up to 1 liter of solution is poured onto 1 bush;
  4. In August, the soil is fed with fertilizer for roses;
  5. After flowering, the soil is fertilized with a mineral mixture, which contains magnesium, potassium and phosphorus;
  6. In September, the last feeding of the season with superphosphate is carried out.

Pruning and replanting

The shrub must be pruned for a neat appearance and stable flowering. In the fall, remove all annual and herbaceous shoots, in the summer they regularly cut off dried buds. After wintering, you need to cut off frozen and weak shoots.

Pruning a rose

A transplant is required only if the landing site was initially unsuccessful. The most suitable time for transplanting is the first half of October. The shrub is removed from the supports and shortened by 2 times, after which it is dug out together with a large lump of earth. Small roots must be removed, and then transplanted to a new place.

Features of wintering a flower

How to prepare rose Don Juan for winter:

  1. All damaged parts of the plant must be cut off;
  2. Before the onset of cold weather, the bush is sprinkled with earth at the base;
  3. The place where the bush will lie is covered with spruce branches;
  4. Shoots are removed from the support and placed horizontally on the covered ground;
  5. From above, the shrub is covered with spruce branches and small branches, covered with foil.

Blooming rose

The rose will bloom profusely throughout the season if properly cared for.

A period of activity and rest

Rosa Don Juan blooms continuously throughout the season, which lasts from early summer to mid-October. From late autumn to the beginning of the spring thaw, the plant is dormant.

Care during and after flowering

Grooming during flowering is no different from normal care, the rose is still watered and fertilized. It is necessary to regularly loosen the soil around the base of the bush. After flowering, all buds and weak shoots are removed and preparation for winter begins.

Possible causes, if not blooming

Roses are loved and appreciated for their beautiful flowers and pleasant aroma, for a number of reasons they may not bloom.

What is the problem:

  • The plant lacks sunlight;
  • The rose is planted in an infertile soil;
  • The plant does not tolerate excess nitrogen in the fertilizing - it forms a large number of leaves instead of buds.

Note! To resume flowering, problems need to be addressed and proper care provided.

Flower propagation

The rose is propagated in vegetative ways, the most popular of which are:

  • Layers of the lower stem. Most common for climbing plants;
  • By dividing the bush into parts, each of which must have 2 shoots;
  • Cuttings that are cut from the bush after flowering. This method is used less often, it is more suitable for roses with small flowers.

In warm regions, reproduction is carried out in the fall after flowering, in cold regions - the procedure is transferred to spring. Reproduction by layering is carried out in the spring.

Reproduction by layering is the most convenient way to breed climbing roses.

What do we have to do:

  1. Loosen the ground around the bush and dig a hole 15-20 cm deep;
  2. The lateral shoot is tilted to the ground, its end is placed vertically in the hole and buried in earth;
  3. The stem is tied with a wire to a peg so that it does not rise.

In summer, the layering is watered, for the winter they are covered with shrubs. By spring, the stem will take root and can be cut from a mature bush.

Diseases, pests, methods of control

With proper care, the Don Juan rose has a strong immunity to the development of diseases. Shrubs planted in regions with cool and humid climates are at risk.

Black spot

What diseases are encountered, and how to deal with them:

  • Powdery mildew appears in damp, cool weather. The affected areas are removed, the plant is treated with Bordeaux liquid;
  • Black spot is a fungal disease that manifests itself as dark and brown spots. The entire shrub is treated with a solution of copper sulfate or Bordeaux mixture 3 times a week, after 7 days, a second treatment is carried out;
  • Bacterial cancer looks like dark, lumpy growths that need to be cut off. The surviving parts are treated with copper sulfate;
  • Coniotirium is a disease in the form of brown-red spots on the stems, which must be removed immediately. The disease occurs if the rose is not properly prepared for winter. For prevention, shrubs should be ventilated during thaws.

Note! It is impossible to delay treatment, since fungal diseases are quickly transmitted to other plants in the country.

The main pests that affect the rose:

  • Aphid. A small number of insects are destroyed with soapy water; in case of severe lesions, the insecticide "Aktara" is used;
  • The leafhopper is an insect that feeds on plant juices and injects poison along with saliva. In the fight against the pest, the insecticide Aktara helps; as a folk remedy, a decoction of wormwood is used;
  • Spider mites infest roses in dry weather when the plant lacks moisture. The insecticide Fitoverm and the acaricide Neoron will help to save the rose from pests;
  • Rosal sawfly is a pest that feeds on the inner tissues of the shoots, gnawing them from the inside. The most effective insecticides in the fight against the sawfly are Actellik, Aktara, Karbofos.

Don Juan - climbing rose, in addition to its attractive appearance, is distinguished by high immunity and frost resistance. If you organize the care correctly, the shrub will delight you with abundant flowering for more than 3 months in a row.
