Rose Hawaiian or Argirea sinewy

The flower market is so rich that even the most exotic plants can be found there. In this article, we will focus on the Hawaiian rose, which is called so not at all because of its belonging to the genus and family of the same name. This is an amazing plant, some of the properties of which were discovered only in the second half of the twentieth century. Next, there will be a description of the plant, methods of growing it and principles of care.

General information about the Hawaiian rose

Hawaiian rose (Argirea sinewy, Elephant dredge, Shaggy morning glory) is a perennial liana of the Argyrea genus of the Bindweed family, which reaches 10 m in length. The name is also found in English (Hawaiian baby woodrose, which translates as a small Hawaiian tree rose). It is often confused with Hawaiian woodrose, but they are very different species.

The natural habitat of the entheogen flower is East India, Burma and Bangladesh. However, this flower can be grown in any part of the world, especially in Africa and Hawaii.

The flower is represented by a slender, tree-like, curly trunk with heart-shaped green terry leaves and tubular flowers of different colors (from yellow to purple) about 5-7 cm long.

The fruits are seeds that look like a wooden rose, which are in pods of 4-6 pieces.

Use in traditional medicine

The roots of the plant are used in folk medicine to treat diabetes, arthritis and infertility in men. In India, this flower has become a folk antiseptic, whose anti-inflammatory properties are very useful to the poor.

Note! Hawaiian rose should not be used by pregnant women, those who have problems with the urinary and reproductive systems, or who have recently had abdominal surgery due to the plant causing the uterus to contract.

Psychotropic properties of the plant

A small amount of seeds are consumed for the effect of mild euphoria and increased libido. However, it can also cause nausea and weakness. Hallucinations were usually not observed, but rare cases have been seen. Hawaiian rose is considered a mild narcotic substance that is similar to LSD. Works for 7 (sometimes 12) hours.

Some gardeners ask the question: "Why can't you grow a Hawaiian rose on your site?" The answer is simple: in Russia, the fruits of Argirea sinewy have been banned since 2009 as a precursor of LSD. The flower is included in the List of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors subject to control in the Russian Federation.

Attention! If this plant is found in a gardener in Russia, he will pay a fine, and the plantings themselves will be destroyed.

Rose seeds

Growing a flower: how to plant it right on the street

Since the plant is native to Asia, it easily takes root and grows in tropical climates. It is best to root Hawaiian baby woodrose with cuttings rather than plant seeds, because this is more likely to take root and bloom.

Also, if special conditions are not created, the seeds may simply die. It is worth planting a plant in mid-spring, when the soil is already warmed up, and the weather is warm and favorable. The flower must be in direct sunlight. It is better to choose a location that is calm and very warm. Alternatively, it can be grown indoors.

Note! If the climate is continental or any other, then special conditions must be created to grow a Hawaiian rose: saturate the soil with humus, sand and make sure that it is loose and moist.

In order for the seeds to germinate faster, the owner usually carries out a scarification procedure. Scarification is a special violation of the seed coat of a plant with the aim of its early growth.

Usually, the hard skin is brushed off a little, or small cuts are made. Then the fruits are soaked in water for 24 hours and planted in the ground. The time of the first shoots varies from 3 days to 2 months, depending on the conditions created. Growth temperature should be about 22 to 26 degrees.

Planting procedure step by step

  1. Prepare the cuttings.
  2. Dig a hole up to 40 cm deep and fill it with prepared soil.
  3. Plant cuttings 30-35 cm.
  4. Pour on top and compact the soil.
  5. Sprinkle with plenty of water.
  6. Can be covered with plastic wrap.

After a couple of months, the plant will grow up and you will need to install a trellis or other support so that it does not fall.

Hawaiian rose

Growing a Hawaiian rose as a houseplant

As a houseplant, Elephant Dredge is quite problematic to grow because:

  • you need to create and constantly maintain special conditions: temperature, humidity and lighting;
  • the flower is quite voluminous, so it will take up a lot of space;
  • the plant requires constant care (cutting, loosening the soil, feeding, etc.);

It often happens that at home Argirea sinewy simply does not bloom or few fruits are formed (it happens that they are small and / or of poor quality). Accordingly, the owner does not achieve the desired result, although he spends time and energy on it.

Therefore, if you grow a Hawaiian rose, then it is better to do it either in a private house or outside the city.

Plant care

For the Hawaiian rose, frequent and abundant watering is necessary, because the plant loves moisture very much. The main thing is not to overdo it, because the plant will start to rot. That is, it is important that the soil is moist, but not wet. In winter, watering should be reduced.

The soil should be nutritious, rich in minerals, well-drained. You can fertilize the soil with a mixture for ornamental plants. Although, in principle, any fertilizer will do.

Note! For the successful cultivation of the Hawaiian rose, the soil must be well filled with humus.

Usually the plant is pruned to make it look neater and more beautiful. Thus, they give the desired shape, it is still an ornamental plant.

Pruning is also useful for the flower itself, because after cutting the weak shoots, the stronger ones begin to develop intensively. For young shoots, pinching is often used.

Attention! You can transplant a Hawaiian rose from the second year of life.

Features of wintering a flower

Reduce watering during this time if grown as a home plant.

If it is outside, then you just need to cover it well, because the flower itself is not very frost-resistant.

Blooming hawaiian rose

Hawaiian baby woodrose blooms from June to August starting in the second year after planting, if conditions are right. Growth stops in winter. During and after flowering, the plant must be well watered and fertilized.

What if it does not bloom, what are the possible reasons? If it does not bloom, then the reason is that the plant simply does not have the necessary conditions. That is, it may be little light, water, minerals, or space. Therefore, in fact, it is not advisable to grow a flower in an apartment.

Attention! The Hawaiian rose can be propagated by both seeds and cuttings. More often propagated by cuttings, because it is more convenient and simpler.

Diseases, pests and ways to control them

Shaggy morning glory, like other plants, is sometimes affected by diseases and pests:

Hawaiian baby woodrose

  • root rot is caused by too much liquid and high acidity of the soil, and this is expressed in the loss of foliage and weakness of the stem;
  • the drying out of the plant speaks of a lack of water - the leaves begin to fall off and the trunk weakens;
  • pests can be: aphids, spider mites and scale insects (to cure a flower, you need to spray with Fitoverm or Actellik solutions).

Hawaiian baby woodrose is an interesting, large, curly and unusual flower that requires maintenance, but is still grown by gardeners. The plant is used to treat health problems and for personal purposes, because it has a psychotropic effect. However, do not forget that it is prohibited by law to grow it.
